Do you like nuts? Sure they are a bit high in calories BUT according to various studies they do offer many health benefits along with increasing the metabolism. Personally I like to include nuts into my snack throughout the day.
So which nuts?
Almonds– Have the most calcium of any nut, and plenty of vitamin E …also “heart healthy” fat. My favorite snack throughout the day.
Peanuts– Lots of protein. I grab a handful before my workout.
Pistachios-*Contains plenty of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which are stored in the retina and help maintain good vision. An ounce of pistachios has as much protein as an egg. I prefer a handful after a workout. Sometimes it can be a challenge for me to only have ONE handful of these!
Walnuts– *High in omega-3 alphalinoleic acid, it helps stop inflammation of the body and helps prevent coronary heart disease. I don’t eat walnuts because my son is HIGHLY allergic to them. Apparently you might want to include a handful with a steak dinner, ” They’ve been shown to reduce the injury that a high-fat meal does on your arteries,” says Dr. Robert Vogel, chief medical director at Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa.
Cashews– Contains 5 grams of protein per ounce and high levels of the essential minerals iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper and manganes. Moderation is key with this nut, I will have a handful occasionally.
*One serving size (roughly a handful) is all you need to get the benefits.
Stick with raw or plain to avoid the sodium.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI’m a raw walnut girl! I have a small handful every day as my midmorning snack…always organic of course. Good fats like nuts are, for me, the key to staying satiated and slender. Okay, and Mark’s awesome challenges!
I love all nuts and must admit i try to get some in everyday. In fact i have almonds to take with me tonight π
Hi Kami! walnuts are tasty! Unfortunately my little guy is highly allergic to them. Thanks for your feedback as always! π
Hi Suzanne! Yum almonds!
I love nuts– I like packing preportioned trail mix with nuts and seeds. (But do my dark chocolate covered almonds count? Maybe if I can stick to just a few!)
Nuts are great. I eat raw almond butter instead of peanut butter, now. Glad I made the change over a month ago. And yesterday for the first time, I even made my own walnut butter. I do feel better when I a well balanced diet that includes nuts.
I love throwing a handful of raw almonds into a small tupperware container with some blueberries. That way I get all of the healthy fats and nutrients from the nuts as well as the antioxidants from the berries. Tastes good, too.
Also, though off-topic a bit, sunflower seeds are a great little snack. Though I tend to pound through a bag of David’s in one sitting…..
I’m a nut and love to eat them too. Walnuts and almonds and peanuts but will eat just about anything nutty.
Hey Mark,
Good to have you back! As far as nuts go, I like cashews and macadamia nuts (although these can be a little pricey). I remember reading that regular peanuts, though, were not that good for you. In fact, there not really nuts at all, but are actually legumes. Do you know what I’m talking about? I’m going to have to look into this further. Best,
Dave
I really do like all nuts…Pistachios are my fav though! Good stuff here Mark!
Hi tfh! Dark chocolate has some healthy benefits as well, see http://tinyurl.com/3eyedb .
Hi Rosy! I have yet to try almond butter, I will give it a go!
Hi Jonathon! Yes,the blueberries a re a fantastic addition! I agree with you on the seeds…a bit addicting!

I am a big fan of nuts. My favorite is actually walnuts. I like to put them in my granola! Yummy! π
Thanks for the information!
My favorite Raw nuts are pistachio’s, but roasted with salt, I’d go with cashews.
Thank goodness the health world came to its senses regarding healthy fats! π I love nuts. It is a tie between the cashew and pecan for me.
Hi Talli! Yummy indeed! π
@Super Healthy Kids, Yum!
Hi Lori! I agree…so tasty!
Almonds and walnuts are my favorites, but all nuts are nutritional power houses. Thanks for the reminder.
I have SUCH a weakness for cashews! I could eat a ton and I cannot eat just one. Too hard LOL!
Love all nuts except cashews.
I am particularly fond of almonds and pistachios
I love CASHEWS!!! But they are all so yummy:)
The only nuts I really like are peanuts, but hey, that’s just me……………….:)

I’m nutty! But you already knew that, didn’t you?
Almonds are my favorite, but I like peanuts, too. And I love cashews and pecans, but buy them in small amounts only since they’re a little too good, if you know what I mean. π
Hope you’re having a great week!
Cashews are my all time favorite and I like pistachios too.
I’m currently on a peanuts in the shell kick.
I love nuts as snacks.
Love love nuts! My favorite is Black Walnuts!
Peanuts are my go to protein!
Hi Miz! You and the toddler are awesome! π
Hi Cammy! We are all nuts! You have a nice week too!
Hi Angie, Very tasty! π
Hi Leah! Awesome snacks!
Hi Tipper! Those walnuts have some good benefits as well!
Hi Mama Zen! Good source of protein!
Wouldn’t you know it, my favorite nut is the most caloric – the macadamia!
But I am not a nut snob – I’ll eat just about any of them!
I have a question I hurt my hip but I still want to work out do you have any suggestions for me?
By the way I love peanuts
Hi Biz! They are all good! π
Hi Suzie! First thing that comes to mind is swimming…you want to stay away from impact exercises. If a pool is unavailable maybe try some contracting exercises (tighten a muscle, hold for 10 seconds, then releasing will help to strengthen your muscles and may even help with healing faster). You may want to consult a physical therapist as well to see what you should and shouldn’t be doing. Sorry about your hip, hang in there.
Hi Mark: Cashews are my favorite nut, but a few minutes ago I had a small bag of peanuts as a snack.
Hey Mark!
Awesome you hit upon one of my most favorite topics, or should I say foods π
Nuts are outstanding!!!!!
Did you know that about 1/4 cup of walnuts gives you almost 100% of the omega-3 we need per day. No need to eat contaminated fish like most people are led to believe to get their omega-3’s.
And I would not worry about the calories. Nuts are very filling and it is hard to eat a lot of them. Plus they have all the right fats. It always surprises me a bit that people will stress over how much nuts they may eat, instead of how much processed carbs or fast food they eat per say.
As for my favorite nut, it varies as I go through waves, but nowadays I love walnuts the most!!!
ALMONDS! Love almonds. Right now I’ve got both all-natural peanut butter AND all-natural almond butter in my fridge, just for some variety π
Great info on the nuts. I know they all have health benefits so I usually go by taste. Hello pistachios, almonds and cashews!
Yes, I have several favorite “nuts,” and many of them have left messages on this post π
OK, I’ve always liked the South’s favorite, the plain ole peanut. I do eat several of the others also. Thanks for all the nutritional data,, it’s good to know how good they are for us!
Hi Marelisa! Those cashews are tasty!
Hi Evita! Thank you for sharing some insight! Much appreciated!
Hi Sagan! Good stuff! π
Hello healthy ashley! Yup, yup and yup!
Hi Dr. J! I left the door open for that one! π
Ah! Peanuts. I never bothered to look into their nutritional value. Protein is what I need…peanuts it is!
i love nuts in my cookies. does that count?
seriously i have been eating almonds, almost daily. the 100 calorie pack.
Nuts…
I have been running around like a mad person in a rat race over the passed couple of weeks and haven’t had time to eat properly. Instead of snacking on junk, which is the easiest in situations like this, I get myself some nuts to carry around for…
I eat less nuts than I used to, because of my toddlers and choking hazards, but I do make sure that If I am out and about with no toddlers around I snack on nuts instead of junk.
I love having to deal with the shells – it makes me linger, and chew better. Pistachios and Brazil nuts are my current favorites.
Almonds do it for me too Mark and I like them raw without the coating of salt.
Hi Yum Yucky! Yum for he peanuts! π
Hi Natural! Not sure about the cookies! π
Hi Sue, Very good idea! π
Hi Tom! Good move!
The only thing at your door is a welcome mat, friend!
when i was younger all i ate were peanuts, good things my tastes have grown up!! i don’t think there’s a nut i don’t like π except maybe brazil nuts, they don’t do a whole lot for me

Great blog you have here, found it searching for something else, will check back soon.
I love nuts especially walnuts and cashew nuts. They go really well with dark chocolates especially as an ingredient in baking.
