The journey continues with day 2 of Tweightloss , team Twit Fit is ambitious and actively pursuing results!
The biggest challenge for many of us is getting started, where do I start, how, what?
I read a fantastic article at WebMD that provides a wealth of information that would be beneficial to anybody that wants to become more active….
“There you are, sitting on the couch, remote in hand, thinking, I should be exercising. If only I weren’t too tired to get off the couch!” Indeed, fatigue is among the most common complaints doctors hear. But you might be surprised to learn that experts say one of the best antidotes to beating fatigue and boosting energy is to exercise more, not less.
It’s now been shown in many studies that once you actually start moving around — even just getting up off the couch and walking around the room — the more you will want to move, and, ultimately, the more energy you will feel,” says Robert E. Thayer, PhD, a psychology professor at California State University, Long Beach, and author of the book Calm Energy: How People Regulate Mood With Food.
And, experts say, when it comes to fighting fatigue, not all exercise is created equal. Read on to find out what kind of exercise — and how much — you should be doing for optimum energy-boosting results.”

Get up move around, the energy will start to flow. Each day add a new goal to your journey. Maybe 10 push ups, tomorrow maybe stop eating snacks after dinner etc. ? Take a step at a time….

I liken your article to the nurse motto we use “If you don’t use it, you lose it”.
Any type of movement makes the difference. Everything comes in phases and stages. K.I.S.S.
Great post.
Good luck to you and your team..(even though I secretly don’t want you to win) snickering

@Strong One, Your teams success would be awesome….doesn’t seem very competitive of me, does it? To be honest, I want everybody to do well, you are welcome to link in or use anytime. Go Tweightloss!

Thanks Mark,
I try to tell my patients this if they say they feel too tired to exercise. It is a difficult concept to get across unless they have tried it in the past.

@Dr. Hubbard, Excellent point. Thank you for your input!

Sometimes when I’m fatigued but feel that I ought to exercise I’ll jump rope, but then I’ll stop almost immediately. If I go for a less intense walk, then my energy bounces right back and the fatigue is gone.
With fatigue I’ve found its better to start off with an easier exercise to get yourself back into it because if you start off too intensely you just get even more tired and lethargic!

@Sagan, A nice slow warm up can do the trick…thanks for your input!

“Every waterfall starts with a drop!â€Β
I like that! I’m a sucker for sayings and I’ve never heard that one but really like it.
@felicepd, Not certain where that one comes from, I use it often though! π
So sitting on the couch won’t help me reach my fitness goals? Darn, I’ve been going about this all wrong.
I jest, I jest.
Try yoga! I do Bikram. People either love it or hate it. I am obsessed with it and can definately tell a difference in my body/mind since I have been going regularly.
@P.O.M., Yoga is on my short list and I need to take a step…Thank you for the suggestion!
Great advice.. I started by finding a fun aerobics class two night a week. Then I added walks in the park on opposite days… now I dont go a day without breaking a sweat doing something!

@Tigerlilly, Fantastic…way to go!

So true!! I’m always much more energized the rest of the day when I work out. When I skip a workout due to fatigue or tiredness, I stay that way all night.
@Juicebox.mom, Yep..I am with you! Thanks for the input!
It is totally about doing small things – those are the ones that will stick.
——————————
@FatFighter, the small things lead to big results!

You’re right. The hardest part is starting. And for me, combining eating right and working out is difficult too. I always want to eat more (of the wrong stuff) when I work out.
Fabulous blog!

@Kathryn, Getting started is a challenge indeed. Take the first step! Thanks for your feedback! π

Yoga totally gives me “calm energy.” It has a much different feel than the hyped up buzz I get from running. π
Today, I’m going to eat 9 servings of fruits and veggies. Five is for weenies.

@Fit Bottomed Girls, Everybody is talking about yoga. I need to take the step…thanks for your feedback! π

Great read and so true…why is it when we don’t feel like it, getting up and moving is EXACTLY what we need. A little trick for women with terrible PMS symptoms is just that…get up and get moving…it truly makes the pain go away. I think I’ll sneak a balance ball into the office to sit on at my desk to try and give my stabilizers a nice daily jolt.
I also read your history, and I have to say wow…awesome!!! Way to go and it’s quite the gift you and your family have in sharing a healthy lifestyle. Congrats.
———————————
@BeckStein, I often will replace a chair with the ball just as you said…great for the stabilizers! Good input. Very much appreciated! Thank you!

Because going for a nice LONG walk isn’t possible for me right now (broken foot) I went out and did some yard work yesterday which felt
refreshing. I’ve been couch bound for awhile & I was really feeling cramped up so this was exactly what I needed. There are other smaller ways I keep in motion such as hanging the laundry outside. It’s a bit more labour intensive than throwing the clothes in the dryer & has the added benefit of getting some rays of sunshine as well. I park in spots furthest away from entrances of stores. I believe this extra added motion gives me a little boost in energy.
@Katschi, Way to go! Keeping active and continue to make progress, hope the foot gets better soon…thank you as always for sharing! π
Ohhh great post!!! I love all the info on your blog! And thanks for the motivation earlier, I was ready to fall back into bed after library time, but instead I’m going to try dong some stretches while I start my new Clive Cussler book. Thanks!
@Miche, Clive Cussler book? Cyclops? Good job with the stretches!
“Get up move around, the energy will start to flow.”
I couldn’t agree more. It really does work.

@Vered, Keep active ….yes!

So very true! I do find that when i’m in the exercise mode i have a lot more energy and when i’ve slacked for a few days my energy takes a downwards dive ;(
@suzanne, Thank you for sharing! π
Hey there, thanks for stopping by my blog.
Luckily, my house has stairs. So in addition to the exercise dvds, I’m hitting the stairs a lot throughout the day.
————————————
@slenderella, I love those stairs….a built in tool for exercise! π

I have found this so true. When you are sluggish, doing exercise…….any kind….can really boost your energy and in return….your metabolism. Sometimes when I hit an afternoon slump, I find myself craving a workout π

@Annette, Great feedback! Thank you!

Interesting article. Bring on the “calm energy!”
@Mama Zen, Calm energy is good π
i just found your site– what an awesome collection of information! i look forward to keep reading π

Great Article Mark! I find that you definately have more energy after you work out, it’s getting there. I find that the series that i use on video uses a phase called “just push play” Even if you don’t feel like it, you get something done, and even if it’s not your best day… you feel better after you’ve sweat a little! Even if i feel like not working out and i get to the gym, i’m so glad i did afterwards. Now if only we could bottle up the feeling we get after we work out, take a “sip” of it when we need motivation…
Ok now i’ve gone off on a tangent LOL, great job Mark!
———————————–
@Erin, So true! Thanks for sharing and keep moving! π

Yeah, I hate that at the beginning. I have to always remind myself (over and over), “You just need to get up and keep moving through it!” About mid-morning this morning was t-o-u-g-h!
Great article, Mark!

@Jenny867-5309, That’s right, thanks for your comments! π

Hi Mark,
I love your blog. Lots of good info here. Quick comment on your earlier post about the excercise ball. A few months ago I started getting a sore back and neck so I started using a big excercise ball (like the one on your blog) as my desk chair. So now as I sit at my desk working I’m constantly working my core throughout the day. As a result, my abs have never been tighter. PS. Thanks for your kind comments about my acai berry website http://AcaiBerry-Products.com . Chaz
@chaz, Thank you for your feedback and I look forward to visiting your site often!
Great post, Mark, and timely, too! π
I’ve noticed that ‘energy breeds energy’ phenomenon. In fact, I have to be careful not to do too much late at night, because all of a sudden it’s 1:00 a.m. and I’m still going strong. (Which wouldn’t be a problem except my alarm goes off at 5:00 a.m. G)
————————————-
@cammy, I hear ya! I have worked out a bit on the late side and stay up till 1am+ also!
It is tough getting up only a few hours later! π
-Mark
It is so hard to get myself up and moving but once I do I always feel less tired. Good advice as always. π
@Rachel D, Thanks for your comments! π
Hello everyone,
A friend of mine and a terrific Naturopath, Jill Thomas has written two books, her first one being “Revive, How to overcome fatigue naturally” which I’m sure can answer many of the questions we have at times when we’re feeling flat.
Exercise is definitely a key contributor to boosting the metabolism because as we know, energy creates energy.
Another key contributor is getting the right nutrients into the body AND absorbed by the body in order to access the benefits they provide. A great resource to peruse, so have a look!

This is excellent advice as I am getting ready to get up and head out for a run.
@John, Have a great run..thanks!
I always feel tons better after I get up and move.
Great advice Mark!

@workout mommy, Keep moving ! π

This is so true! I always feel energized after a workout . . .for a couple hrs at least and then I want to crash π
@Marcy, Thanks for your comments!
I used to get to karate class early after work and just sit in the corner with my eyes closed! After class started, I would get energized! I still force myself to be active (run) when I’m tired and after a few miles, I’m fully awake and good to go! You are absolutely right about how being active will make you less fatigued!
