Most of us would prefer a fast metabolism. Of course when we exercise, our bodies require more energy and our metabolism increases in order to supply it. However, most of the time we are not all that active and in my opinion we want to improve the caloric burn when doing very little, like sitting around or even sleeping. Remember a slower metabolism means more of those calories you take in are going to be sitting around waiting to become extra pounds. *Various studies have shown that certain foods can assist in the metabolism boost.
**Maybe we should include some foods that speed up the metabolism naturally:
Coffee – A quick boost, consider adding a little extra caffeine to your diet. A cup will give it a quick kick into high gear that can be helpful during the day.
Green Tea -Most will say this is a healthier alternative to coffee. Chemicals known as catechins found in green tea are believed to stimulate your metabolism.
Citrus Fruits – Researchers say that foods rich in Vitamin C, such as oranges, tangerines and grapefruit contain natural metabolism boosting properties that also make your immune system stronger.
Hot Peppers– Capsaicin is the ingredient in peppers that gives them their heat. Research shows that this compound actually stimulates your body’s production of adrenaline which kicks your metabolism into high gear temporarily. Throwing some jalapenos at your sandwich or some hot peppers in your scrambled eggs could help you burn more calories.
Dark Green Vegetables – High in fiber with high levels of vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to be healthy. Spinach, mustard greens and collard greens are good examples
Spices – Cumin, Ginger and cinnamon are all good examples. Adding a decent amount of these spices into your meals can give them more flavor and can help increase your metabolism.
Lean Protein – Protein is harder for the body to digest than carbohydrates, and because it requires more energy the result is more calories. By including lean protein in your meal, you’ll be giving your metabolism a boost when you eat. Try to include chicken or turkey breasts and fish.
Whole Grains – Fiber is as easy for the body to digest. It takes more energy resulting in fewer calories available to be converted into fat cells.
So I guess the idea is to stay active and make wise food choices! ? Oh yes of course…
Water– Drink your water! It helps the body flush out excess sodium and toxins. A German study showed that drinking water helped boost the metabolism by 30 percent. Drinking enough water to stay well hydrated also helps to keep you from mistaking thirst for hunger, and can prevent unnecessary calorie consumption and binging.
What do you think, any additions?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWe’re growing some peppers in the Topsy Turvy. Things are going great thus far. I grew them just for this reason- so I could have more to put in my food and give my metabolism a boost.
I guess glazed donuts would not apply here?

Hi! It’s been quite some time. I guess my metabolism is low as I don’t have a proper diet. Great tips and will take more of the recommended food to help myself.
Just checking in to see if everything is ok. You’re missed in the blogosphere!
Thanks for this great, healthful list. I’m a big fan of citrus fruits and whole grains….love cinnamon too! 🙂
I just came back…now it’s your turn!! “Cooooooooooommmmmme Baaahhhhhcck!” (said like Dory, in Finding Nemo.)
This is a great article. I have been looking for something to help educate my patients. I now have something to refer them to.
Thanks

Hey Mark, long time no visit –it’s been a long summer of lots to do not enough time.
Anyway, great list you have here. I think I got it covered – not so much on the spicy foods but I do like green tea. In fact, I get Yerba Mate from Aviva because it’s flavored with lemon myrtle or ambrosia, taste great hot or cold. Thanks for sharing.
As a former horseracing jockey during 23 years I never struggled with my weight by applying the following balanced food intake formula;
15% fats, 35% sugars, 50% proteins.
If your physical activity is low, don’t exceed 1200 calories a day, it it is high you can go up till 2200 calories a day always implementing the above formula.
Overweight will melt away week after week.
Hey, just found this article thanks to Stumble. Great list!
I just wanted to throw out that although green teas are great, oolong teas will actually be better for metabolism and digestion. An oolong is basically halfway between a green and a black tea. Green teas are lightly fermented, black teas are fully fermented and oolongs fall in between. Many also have a much more “accessible” flavor to those who have said they don’t like the taste of green tea!
