Each week I try to add a different challenge to my routine. I would like to revisit one that we did back in August of 08′; the Wall Sit Challenge. Remember, the wall sit is a bit different from typical squats since you’re holding a static position for a certain period of time, rather than working through an entire range of motion. I enjoy this exercise because you can do it while reading a book, watching TV, and even pretend you’re scratching your back at the grocery store. π Do it anytime without any equipment to help you build endurance in the lower body. Here’s the challenge and how to do it:
1. Stand in front of a wall (about 2 feet in front of it) and lean your back against it.
2. Back up against the wall, slide down until your knees are at about 90-degree angles and hold, keeping the abs contracted, hands at your sides for 35 seconds. Come back to start and repeat with an increase to 45 seconds, then 55 seconds and finally to 65 seconds.
Please go at your own pace and if necessary start out at less hold times. If you are looking for a greater challenge try the hold with one leg and increase the hold times.
…………………………………………………You can do it!
.Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful..

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThis is a great exercise for your legs that is also really easy on your knees. I’m most likely going to need knee surgery to remove some loose cartilage in the near future, so I have to be careful with what I do. This exercise is perfect for me. Thanks!

Great challenge! Managed to hold it for 2.5 minutes before my legs got shaky π I like your idea of holding one leg at a time too; that would definitely increase the challenge considerably.
Hey Mark! Yes, another challenge, this one is cool.
love the challenge and the quote!!
I have never done these without a medicine ball….hmmm
OH.. these are great. These are classic.
I did these with my athletes for strength training as well as rehabilitation!
Knees at 90 degrees and then you can vary the flexion of your knee as well as doing high knees, or like you suggested extending one leg out at a time.
Whew.. those really do burn.
Great suggestion my friend.
@David, low impact and a solid burn yes!
@Sagan, fantastic!
@Rosy, Thank you!
@Annette, Thanks! π
@bobbi, I have no doubt! Great addition! π
@Strong One, Thanks for the feedback as always!
We used to do wall sits as part of a ski conditioning class I took back in the day. A great exercise that anyone can do anywhere!
Hi Mark. Oh, this IS a good one! I’ve done it before (not very recently though). It looks easy, that’s all I can say. Love the quote!
An excellent exercise! Because of my karate training, I also do this as a deep “horse stance.” Thank you!
[…] wrote an interesting post today […]
@cathy, Yes it is! π
@Davina, Thanks for the feedback!
@Dr.J, Yes the good ol’ horse riding stance! I remember those days!
Kids like these too.
I have some a similar exercise, but with a balance ball between my back and the wall. This too looks like a great exercise!
Wall sits are a very handy exercise and I HATE THEM HATE THEM HATE THEM!!!!
What a great challenge. I have to say I never gave these enough of a chance as I found them really challenging (no surprise there) Sure I did a few… but it wasn’t an exercise that I just couldn’t wait to do again. Oh I could wait, and I have waited…
Perhaps this will get me motivated to give them another try π Thanks!
OK, that looks hard. I might try it tomorrow. Love the quote. What a great way to look at challenges!
Man, I bet you feel those in the upper leg. And it must be excellent for posture, a problem I am constantly working on. Thanks, Mark!

We used to have to do these as ‘punishment’ in HS volleyball. I hated them then, but I LOVE them now. I love challenging myself and really feeling it and watching my legs and abs start to shake from exhaustion. Gunna go do some now!
I love wall squats/sits. They really work the quads. Nice challenge. π
I am dizzy with a book on hand doing this exercise! Have a nice day!
I’ve done wall sits, and need to do them more often. You can definitely feel the burn…………:)
Hanah,Punishment! I have an odd sense of humor…:)
