The Holidays are upon us! It seems that during this time of celebration we find ourselves busy, full of stress and always in a hurry. It could be finances, an abundance of obligations or a thought of a lost loved one. What do you do, what do I do to keep a healthier approach to the season?
Holiday Thoughts
- Prioritize the activities-no need to “do it all.”
- Set aside a specific time to process sad and lonely feelings. Don’t let the feelings control you..YOU decide to move onto the positive thoughts, take control.
- Maintain the healthy habits
- Set a budget and stick with it
- Don’t dwell in the past, use those experiences to keep the journey moving forward with strong resolve!
- Do something for someone else..maybe volunteering some time to help.
- Try something new…make a snowman, snow fort. Make a sandcastle π
- Always schedule time for yourself-read a book, movie etc.
- Keep up the fitness routine or start a new one.
Maybe a useful thought or two? What do the holidays do for you? How do you celebrate?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI love the holidays! It helps to have small kids around. Their excitement just spills over and makes it a magical time. My big thing – especially this year – is to know when to say no. To me, this time of year needs to be more about feeling the season than making sure that every little thing gets ticked off of the list.
Happy Holidays, Mark!
Hey Mark,
…and I think I’ll head out for a jog in just a bit here this morning! And maybe later this weekend, I’ll get out and play in the snow! Have a great weekend!
Hi cathy! It is a magical time! Great feedback!
Hi Lance! You are a dedicated athlete! The snow, cold won’t stop you! Fantastic!
Wonderful column, Mark!!
Each year is different. Always an adventure π
Happy Holidays, friend!!
A wonderful list-and a reminder we should enjoy the holiday or really whats the point?
Hi Dr.J! Always and adventure indeed! Thanks!
Hi tipper! Agreed…enjoy and appreciate!
For the last two years, instead of gifts, we have been giving our parents (and with blended families and adoption reunions, there are a LOT of them!) “Dinner Cards” – a series of three dates throughout the year for them to come to our house for dinner. We tell them we are opening our calendars instead of our wallets, to spend TIME WITH them, not money on them. It helps to keep the connections open all year round, not just during the holidays. This year, we are giving similar cards to our siblings as well. Gifts are for the kids π
Hi Mark, Merry Christmas my friend! Love what you wrote about taking to time to process, often we just shove it down, hoping it won’t rear it’s ugly head. Taking time to deal with ALL our feelings is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.
I like to identify at least 3 non food oriented holiday traditions I enjoy…and indulge in them.
Nice blog. Randomly stumbled upon it. Good tips.
Hi JoeGirl! Fantastic ideas…very creative!
Hi Audra! I agree…Merry Xmas!
@FoodFitness, Thank you!
Hello, It’s been a while! “Busy, full of stress and always in a hurry” seems to be the story of my life. Volunteering at this time of year makes me realize that “there but for the Grace of God, go I.” It’s a good way give back & remember what the Holidays are really about. Wishing you & yours all the Best this Holiday Season!
Hi DaDiva Street! Thank you! Happy Holidays!
Boy, we’d love to trade building a sandcastle for building a snowman! The kids keep lamenting that they want to see snow, which we almost never get here π
I enjoy baking and giving the goodies away–so I don’t eat them all myself lol.
I also love to read.
Happy belated holidays to you and your family!
Hi Lisa!
Hope the kids enjoy the snow…I would imagine the goodies are big hit! Keep reading and enjoy the Holidays! π
You certainly are right on the money with your observations and suggestions on this topic!
I went to our local art museum today and wandered slowly through the galleries which had the tranquility of a library with beautiful decorations. It was very therapeutic π
I tend to get derailed over the holidays, but I think that can be a good thing: I remember WHY my health is so important to me, and it increases my motivation and desire to get and stay healthy!
Hi Dr. J! The art museum would be very therapeutic. Fantastic!
Hi Sagan! A daily journey with time to reflect…thanks for your input!
Our bodies are wired for health and vitality, not for illness and disease. Health is how our bodies function, not how they feel. Health comes from the inside out. And, importantly, the choices we make play a part in our health and well-being.
I always enjoy the holidays with family and friends. I’ll admit, I tend to stress out! LOL But I always dedicate time to help others (the homeless, etc.) and try to participate in old family traditions – even though the grandparents are gone now….
Hope your holidays were healthy and blessed, Mark!
smiles
Michele
