Suspend your reality. What is reality to you? Your career, kids, financial challenges, bills, food, exercise, clothes, going to school, health, illness etc.? Whatever reality is for you, it equates to responsibility…the mind is in reality mode. What we think affects how we feel. Your thoughts create emotions; emotions generate moods, and your feelings alter how your body functions. Personally, without taking a break from reality I will often find myself stressed and overly anxious. I need to allow myself to deal with my worries, and to feel my emotions. When my worries cannot be solved immediately, it is important that I am able to shut them off and not allow the negative stuff to wash over everything. I call this suspending my reality. How do I suspend my reality? A nice run with some music to keep me going will take my mind, emotions and body on a more clear, healthy path. I also LOVE movies! Two hours of losing myself in a different world, no worries, responsibilities not anything! So I asked some of you. “How do you suspend your reality? “
Many responses, here are a few:

.

beilnates “I normally do it by drawing the curtains, putting on some music and drinking a large vat of coffee”
.
mirandarights “reality is subjective. change your thinking, change your reality. also – cookies”
.

.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThanks for putting my response on your post! It seems that reading, watching a movie and working out are the main things that people do to suspend their reality.
I enjoyed reading other people’s responses. π
Cool post, Mark! I read a harlequin romance novel, it’s a quick read and always takes me away from reality (maybe I bit too much). Afterwards, I’m ready to conquer the world.
Sadly, I drink. although sometimes I workout.
I sleep to suspend my reality. Oh, and I read.
@Talli, Thanks for your feedback!
@Rosy, Awesome!
@Irene, I am glad you workout…good for you.
@POD, Sleep and reading is good!
All good ideas. I have a lot of trouble turning off my mind and suspending reality. I use long runs, music, comedy, and tasks that require concentration and memory but not “reality” (like studying foreign languages, memorizing poetry, doing crossword puzzles).
Like POD, my dreams are quite vivid and “unreal,” but fun! I am pretty reality based, however. That’s where weltzschmertz comes in π
[…] wrote an interesting post today […]
We in the nursing world sometimes refer to this as taking a ‘mental holiday’.
Always good for you.
I suspend my reality with a hot bath, candles and music! If I’m being totally decadent, a glass of wine or two takes it over the top with just a little bit of guilt.
@tfh, That is a great idea….concentration would require one to stay focused?
@Dr. J, two worlds collide….very cool!
@Strong One, That is what my wife calls it as well! π
@Annette, No need for guilt… π
What a beautiful post. I suspend reality by watching a movie or by skiing. These are the only two activities that truly make me forget about everything.
Hi Mark,
For me – a good run with some great music is one way to suspend reality. Or a hike into the woods, where I can become more connected to nature. And…a good movie also works for me!
Great post Mark! I like to turn it all off and play with the dog. He’s such a great companion, always there when I need him most. Oh, exercise works wonders as well!!
Have a great weekend!

Add me to the sleeping and reading list (when the kids let me).
ummmm, a massage will do it. A bath, too. A good yoga class. Meditation would too, if only I would do it. So will a long walk/run/snowshoe (but it has to be solo).
I read romance junk. I love it
To suspend reality, I usually write, and read.
If I could, I love to escape to nature to clear my mind–it gives me such a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of every day life. Nothing better than going on a hike and scanning an incredible view (and getting a great workout).
And, guess I shouldn’t forget blog reading. My favorite guilty pleasure lol!
Interesting. I had to think about this. Fortunately, lately I haven’t had to do much suspension. However, there is a point in each day when the whole world gets blocked out, and there is only the here and now. That’s the second the Lion and I shut the bedroom door. We have an unspoken rule that the second that door shuts, all the worries of the day cease to exist. It works brilliantly.
@Vered, Skiing is a fantastic way to take the mind off of it! thanks for sharing!
@Lance,A run, hike yes!
@rupal, I have a little dog as well..of course exercise! π
@Cathy,Sleeping..what’s that? π reading is nice to let the mind go.
@Kara, I have meditation and yoga on my short list…still working on it! π
Such a good post! It’s really neat to be able to see the wide variety of ways that we relax and suspend reality.
I have a night ritual that suspends reality momentarily for me (roughly based on Deepak Chopra’s advice). It involves a scalp massage, a foot massage–which includes soaking feet in warm water–and drinking warm milk with vanilla.
Mark-neat post! I like to read-books and blogs, I also like to watch movies-and cook. In the summer I love to garden. All great escapes!
I’m definitely a reader–sci-fi, romance, and oddly enough, natural history tomes. Sometimes I play Civ (I soothes the control freak in me), and I also go for a long, slow run. I can’t think about anything after a mile except breathing.
Running! It helps and it definitly puts everything into perspective.
For me, it’s simple. A walk and my camera = Reality Suspended………….:)
For me, it’s time spent in my sanctuary…well, actually my porch. I have two bird feeders and a bird bath right outside. When I sit in my rocking chair and watch the birds eating at the feeders or bathing in the bath, their reality becomes mine. I forget all the things I need to do in this moment of joy.
I wonder – is it really suspending reality or are we entering a new reality, one that takes us away from our responsibilities, worries and fears? Just food for thought.
For me I love a jog, or today I played monster mini golf with my nephew…that was a lot of fun, took me away from my worries and at the same time was very real.
@Sagan, Thank you!
@Marelisa, Wow! That definitely will do just fine. π
@Tipper, Books and blogs…me too! π
@Anya, all look like fantastic ideas!
@GirlOnTop, Running…yes!
@LisaNewton, I have seen your fabulous work! I know! π
@Sara, wonderful.. π
Stacey Shipman, Hmmm….I think it is. Maybe it is way to open the mind and allow some ne, ideas, thoughts? Thanks for your feedback!
