I was asked a question on Twitter from @gloreebe88 “I am so not interested in jogging. Any advice for me?” Being the gullible one that I am I responded “Physical reasons or just no interest?” After going back and forth for a bit she fessed up and let me know that she was just being a “smart ass” as she put it. Too late! My thinking wheels had already begun to turn…this would be a good challenge for the week. Also with the cold looming overhead an indoor workout is much more inviting! Or for you warmer weathered peeps…maybe you are looking for a change?
Ready to give the Stair Challenge a try?
Let’s start with a hydrating tip from @skinnyjeans “Time for morning hydration: Go drink a glass of water. Your body functions better when hydrated.”
Turn on some good tunes. I have 16 stairs… so I will run up and down 50 times this go round.
Set your goal and go for it!
*Modify and walk if necessary and/or start at 20 today…work your way up to 100 flights!

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackGreat timing! My friend suggested to me last week that I take some of my idle time at work to do the stairs. This way, I could get paid to work out! π
But damn, Mark! 50x? I’ll give it my best shot to try & do 10x. I don’t want to get carted away in an ambulance π
If people don’t have stairs at home, hopefully they can use the stairs in an office building or apartment building close by.
Who needs a treadmill, right?
I’m going to link to this post today cause I love this challenge!
Have a great day Mark!
p.s. 50x….damn!
Great challenge! I used to work in a hospital Burn Unit which was on the 8th floor, I used to run back and forth from the basement to visit various patients at least 5x daily. Great workout!
I use this one when SAFE π when traveling to tire out the toddler if we’re trapped in a hotel in a coooold climate!
I’ve done stairs before! One other benefit I find, in the winter, is that if I’m a little cool (because our house is cool, for instance) – running the stairs not only is a good workout – it’s a great way to warm up my body!
Great idea…I like it!
@Katschi, 10 is a fantastic start!
@Rupal, Awesome!
@Miz,Chasing Tornado is a workout in itself!
@Lance, Very true!
@Lance, Thanks!
o.k mark i have 14 stairs and ran up and down them 10 times and i have to tell you i’m breathing pretty hard here π Oh i have arthritis in my knees so i’m pretty proud of myself!!
Would LOVE this challenge – if only I had stairs! I remember running up and down the stairwell for exercise when in college. Cheap and a GREAT workout! (And SO much better than just jogging – at least for someone who would rather chew off her leg than jog.)
Great idea – I actually do run up and down the stairs in my condo building on occasion (chasing kitties of course!)- it’s a real workout. Makes me realize I am not in as good shape as I thought I was! Training for my second 1/2 marathon which I hear is a bit hilly, so need these workouts.
OOOO stairs fun fun!!! lol
@suzanne, fantastic job!
@cathy, ha! well…maybe some jumping jacks and burpees. Please don’t chew off the leg! π
@Missicat, great for training indeed…those little kitties! π
@bobbi, fun indeed!
I don’t have stairs in my place now. Dang. I guess I don’t have an excuse though…I used to do stairs all the time at the univeristy just down the street!
Like Mizfit, I’ve done the hotel stair thing!!
I use the stairmaster at the fitness center all the time. I was once on National TV while doing that! A story for another time π
Great challenge! I love stairs. Can really FEEL it and it feels good!
A stair challenge…maybe we should make something like this one of our weekly TiSheDo Challenges – Tisha chose squats this week, YIKES!
I need this challenge! Funny thing is, I cool down after my run, my heartrate goes back to normal, then all it takes is the four flights up to my apartment to have me huffing and puffing again– stairs are a great workout!
Given how archaic our elevators are at work, I am this close to switching to the stairs. Of course, I don’t think the stairwells were built to code either. I have visions of me lying bent and broken after bouncing down 9 flights of cement steep stairs. Elevator? Stairs? Pretty much a toss up in safety. grin
Before you hit those stairs make sure you have a pair of sneakers that will protect your feet and knees from the unforgiving concrete surface.
Perfect timing for me with this one. I usually run in a very hilly neighborhood. Now that it is cold and dark when I run, I hit the treadmill and don’t have the same kind of workout (the incline on the treadmill just doesn’t do it for me). So, stairs should be good. Thanks!
At my place, I got 4 floors with 16 steps each so I go up and down to get some blood pumping. Love the stairs!
PS. Thanks for the hydration props. Indeed, they are becoming my most popular Twitters.
I do the stairs a lot at work just to get the blood pumping after sitting at my desk for hours at a time. We have 4 flights, so I run up and down them about 3 times usually. Will try to increase tomorrow to honor this challenge! Thanks
LOVE IT! Getting up right now!
Stairs are harder than one would expect!
Ok, Mark, I did it! There are 72 steps at work, once up and once down counting as a round ~~ I did 14 rounds!!!! GO ME!!!
Thank you very much for the challenge!!! THIS is a challenge that I plan on incorporating into my daily routine at work!
How did YOU do, anyway???
Great Idea indeed- except that I don’t have stairs where I live! Any alternate suggestions? π
@Blake, so the university is in?! π
@Dr.J, I look forward to that story!
@Sagan,I agree!
@DC Watts, I like it! Great idea!
@tfh,Lucky you, hit those flights a few time!
@Urban Panther, Hmmm….battle scars would be kind of cool! π
@chris, so true…good shoes!
@Felice,good call!
@Stephanie Quilao,They are popular tweets!:)
@Juicebox.mom,Great job!
@workout mommy, go get em!
@Girl on Top, yes they are!
@Katschi, fantastic job you! I was walking at 44, ran again at 48-50…it was tough!
@Maricris, The Burpee Challenge is a good option!
This is a great idea. I jog on a treadmill at my gym but going up and down stairs is definitely a great way to get in shape.
I’m baa-aack Mark! Me oh my, the stairs are my least favorite activity, but I really should give this one a try. At school, I always use the stairs, and often my classes are 3 or 4 floors up, so that’s a good start!
Wow. Stairs, huh? The first 5 flights are ok…it’s the remaining 15-95 that’s painful!
I can’t say I’ll try this one, but I’ll have y’all in my thoughts as you do π
Oops. pressed it too early.
I was going to say that maybe I’ll try the jogging challenge instead!
In my school years (don’t even ask how long ago) I used to do stadium stairs to keep fit. Today, it’s take stairs instead of elevators. Not at the running pace it used to be.
As always, great tips. You have a such a wide range of flexibility with your workout suggestions.
You are the man!
@Marelisa,A good addition to mix it up indeed!
@The Baroness, Welcome back!
@Diana, Thoughts are positive? π
@Tom Rooney, A good walk or rune…either is effective. π
@Strong One, Thanks Man!
Great tip!
Doing well!! Got the obligatory holiday eating column up, done “my” way??
I love using stairs though recently hurt my knee (tendonitus) going up and downhills so I’m supposed to be careful for awhile (dammit).

Stairs are awesome. The gym that I work @ has 3 levels. My clients dread the stairs. LOL I love them! I’d rather run the stairs than spend 30 mins on the treadmill. As always, good stuff Mark!
@tipper, Thanks!
@Dr.J, Awesome!
@POD, oh definitely avoid the impact.
@Bex, Thanks Bex!
Didn’t read all the comments, so maybe it was already mentioned… but…with so many people cooped up in the office all day, I always recommend stairs. Many people working in buildings with tons of stairs, they can get off their desk 10 minutes twice a day and feel good about getting some activity.
I like this and I’m going to go for this!
