It is that time to start getting the festivities on. Thanksgiving with turkey and maybe some pie. In December the eggnog, cookies etc. New Years Eve going to parties eating food, maybe a few drinks. It is pretty much ongoing through the end of the year! How does one keep the body from going into the flab zone? You can start with your own little private gym…your kitchen! Personally I take on a little less guilt during the holidays, if I keep the exercise going. During our journey
we will have to push ourselves a bit. Some ideas while you are cooking some of those tasty holiday treats:
Squat for Pans and Pots-When it’s time to pull out the pans and pots under the kitchen counter, squat down next to the pot instead of bending over. This is exercise is great for strengthening the arms and legs. Grab the pot with two hands and hold it close to the body. Before standing, take a deep inhale. On the exhale, pull in the belly and straighten the legs. Try not to use the hands to assist on the way up. Repeat this exercise while waiting for something to heat up.
Counter Push Ups-A common kitchen move of stirring is good one for the arms, but there’s another exercise that can bring on some results for the arms. Put the hands on the kitchen counter feet away from the counter, like a “push-up.” Keeping the body in one line from toes to the head, keep the chin down, head back, and pull in the belly button. Begin the push up, bend the arms and touch the chest to the counter. Do 10 reps, rest, and then do 10 more.
With so much time spent in the kitchen, maybe spice it up a bit with an exercise or two?
Please share if you have any exercises to add! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
A good balance between exercise and food intake is important, as this helps to maintain a healthy body weight.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackHi Mark: I definitely need all of the help I can get when it comes to keeping weight off during the Holidays. I love eggnog, and turkey, and ham … I’m going to have to do more cardio during the month of December π
while waiting for something to mix or boil, I do leg lifts. I stand with my hands on the counter for balance. Then with leg straight, butt tight, I squeeze and lift the leg behind me.
I’m doing too much as it is when I am cooking. I am one to do pushups, crunches when kids are in the bath tub, though!
I never thought of doing squats in the kitchen. But, I do dance while I’m cooking. I love dancing, so that, is my exericse. Cool post and great tips. Thanks Mark!!!
oooh my dishtowel lunges in kitchen (insert mental link to video here as Id kinda forgotten about em as well!) and then grab a clean towel if a guest spies you throwing yours on floor to lunge with….
@Marelisa, cardio is a must on my end as well!
@Super Healthy Kids, I like it! Thanks for the feedback!
@Rachel/Fit Mom, you are always going! π
@Rosy,Get the music going definitely!
@Miz, Awesome Miz! thanks!
I’ll march in place while waiting for something to boil, etc. Preferably when no one is watching!
I’ve been doing Jillian Michaels 30-day Shred DVD the last couple days…I’m so sore from her squats that the pot and pan squat would kill me, seriously, I can’t sit down! π
I saw a funny commercial with wrestling a wet. slippery defrosted turkey. Looked like a pretty good workout! They wrestle greased pigs down this way, but I can’t day I’ve ever had the pleasure π
Wall sits against the kitchen door! At least until my 5 yr tries to sit on my lap.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
These are all great! Ever since I read ChiRunning, whenever I’m standing at a counter I try to lean forward and rest lightly against it with my back straight as I chop or whatever– it subtly engages the abs. Happy Thanksgiving!
Ok Im on it!
One thing you didn’t mention though I liked all your suggestions was getting the end of the dish towel slightly wet and then chasing your family around the kitchen with it, threatening to snap that wet end at them. This exercise can really burn some calories! And a side note, it encourages those kitchen loafers out of your way.
Happy Thanksgiving!
But I just want pie Mark…I am a lost cause. I DID do plank exercises though!
Those are good ones. Whenever I need something from the cupboard, I like to get in a really good stretch as I reach up for it.
I also occasionally cart pumpkins around the kitchen for good measure. You know. Just to work those arms;)
I’ve really been trying to walk my errands whenever possible – I’m lucky that I live in an area where the post office, bank, and grocery store are all within 1-2 miles from my house, so as long as the weather’s not too cold, I bundle up and go for it! Gotta go to those place anyway, so might as well try to multi-task in a workout. π
Dance! Dance! Dance – it’s my favorite and with parties and festivities, I pump up the volume and move. Good cardio and it’s fun!
Happy T-day to you!
I agree: during the holidays I generally allow myself to indulge, without going out of control. I’m sure I’ll gain a couple of pounds, but since I keep exercising, I don’t worry about it too much.
I run up and down the stairs…oh…maybe that’s because I’m getting more food from the freezer! If I can find a local 5K race that’s going on, I’ll sign up – we’re doing one tomorrow. And it’s forced me to get up and get out there running.
Have a GREAT Thanksgiving Mark!
It’s tough to get our workouts in during the holidays! Great ideas to help though! Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving!
Arm raises of hand from treats tray to mouth likely doesn’t count, eh? Sigh, no, I thought not.
Ahh, something to help in between all the tasting! Wishing you & yours a Happy Thanksgiving!

This isn’t particularly Thanksgiving specific, but it is a good way to add activity into your day. If I am not time restricted, I make exercise for myself by separating tasks and doing multiple trips. For example, if I was going to have lunch downstairs on the patio I would take plates down and then run back up the stairs, then take the sandwiches down, then run back up the stairs, then take the drinks. Instead of juggling and making one trip, I do multiple. I add more activity to most household chores, and I think it really adds up over time.
Kelly
@Kelly, A fantastic tip! Extra trips equals extra exercise! Thank you!
Very interesting! Making use of the environment around us.
I like the creative idea of still being able to do exercises with the pots and pans while going crazy cooking for the holidays π – Btw, Happy Thanksgiving!
Calf raises! anytime- anywhere.
Have a great Thanksgiving!

I know you are right about spicing it up with some exercises but not sure about my counters-Happy Thanksgiving!!!
I thought I was the only one that did counter push ups. Since they are very easy, I usually do a lot of reps OR I’ll do them verrrrrry slow. That’s usually enough to give me a little soreness the next day since this isn’t an exercise that I typically do.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
I’m all for sit ups for pumpkin pie π
Happy Thanksgiving all!
Great Post! Exercises in the kitchen are great way to cut down on stress and kill some time while waiting for the water to boil. Try Lunges. if you have an island, its great to do them around the island, that way every time you come back around, you can check whatever you got cookin’!
Happy Thanksgiving!!
@Rosabel, Absolutely!
@Maricris, Happy Thanksgiving!
@Lori,Awesome π
@Stephanie,I like it!
@Rupal, yes indeed!
Mark — leg lifts with a band. Great when stuck at the sink.

Neat post! I always like to encourage myself about house cleaning-by thinking of it as a work out too.
I love those counter-top push-ups. They’re so convenient to do while waiting for a portion of dinner to cook — and there’s no weights for my kids to get into at that moment and disturb me.
I don’t know if anyone else posted this but another one — leg lifts to the rear and side. Hold the counter lightly and lift your right leg rear 10 reps then to the side 10 reps. Repeat for left leg; complete 3 sets.
Squatting is a great idea when reaching for your pots and pans! Not only will it work your legs, but it will prevent you from injuring your back. Nice post! π
