Have you heard the term “liquid calories? ” The calories we drink that go straight down with no chewing required?
The calories we drink on a day-to-day basis do count in a big way. Oh here we go now we have to watch what we drink also? Well….
5 Points to consider about liquid calories:
1. Liquid calories don’t seem to register in the stomach like food calories do, so they don’t satisfy hunger as well. The next time you drink a high-calorie beverage, check in with your stomach an hour later. How do you feel? Are you still satisfied?
2. Watch the high-fructose corn syrup. some experts say that part of the rise in obesity in the United States is due to our rising consumption of high-fructose corn syrup, which is used in many soft drinks, fruit juices, and sports drinks.
3. Excess calories contribute to obesity, of course, and full-calorie soda is no doubt adding excess calories to many of our diets.
4. It is better to eat your carbohydrates than to drink them. A Purdue University study showed that significant weight gain may occur when we consume carbohydrates as liquids rather than as solid food.
5. The bottom line to alternative sweeteners. Environmental Nutrition suggests consider switching to products that use a less controversial sweetener like sucralose (Splenda) or a sucralose blend” and avoid low-calorie foods sweetened with aspartame.
Cutting back on sweetened drinks really doesn’t have to be a big sacrifice. Very-low calorie beverages can be refreshing and delicious.
Moderation, moderation, moderation.
..
Two recipes to try:
50/50 Fizzy Water
3/4 cup seltzer water, club soda, or fizzy mineral water
1/4 cup orange juice (as fresh as possible)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Add water, orange juice, and vanilla extract to a large glass and stir. Add ice cubes as desired.
Lemon Ginger Iced Green Tea
2 cups water
1 cup Splenda low-calorie sweetener
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
6 green tea bags
4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Add water, Splenda, ground ginger, and lemon peel to medium saucepan and bring to boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to where it sustains a gentle boil and cook for about 7-8 minutes. Remove from heat and add the green tea bags. Steep this tea mixture for 10 minutes, stirring or dunking the bags often.
Remove tea bags and stir lemon juice into the tea liquid. Cover and refrigerator for up to 1 to 2 weeks.
To make a cup of iced tea, pour 1/4 cup of the concentrated tea mixture into a tall glass and stir in 3/4 cup of sparkling or seltzer water or club soda.
Again, moderation is the key.
Stay active, stay healthy!

@Jenn, Congratulations to your brother…fantastic!

Amen! That’s why I only drink water. Saves me from packing on the extra cals.

@Marcy, I am all about the water too!

Good post. Even artificial sweeteners have problems. I’ve read that consuming artificial sweeteners messes with your body’s metabolism. They kind of trick the brain’s natural ability to count calories. Still, I love sweetened iced tea, and drink copious amounts of the stuff sweetened with artificial sweeteners. It’s my Achilles heel (one of many, sadly).

@cathy, Keep working at it! π

I do the same – water only! And alcohol sometimes too π

@Laura, Thanks for your input! π

I can’t wait to try the lemon ginger iced green tea! We’re having company over next week, and I think it’ll be the perfect thing to serve.

@Mamasphere, Let me know how you like it! π

those look like great recipes but right now I’m totally a water only gal. I cut out all my sodas a few months ago and it really made a difference. Although I was only drinking diet soda, I think it helped me lose weight by dropping them from my diet. Not sure how that all worked but I think it did.
————————
@Big Girl, Fantastic! Yes, I was big Diet Coke guy myself……dropped it and it seemed to help.
Thanks for sharing!

Oh yea, I’m regretting the beer I had this week. Those calories are already rearing their ugly face on my scale π
—————–
@Sandy (Momisodes), bah… you are going to be great…keep it going, no problem! π
-Mark
You know hon., if I gave up my third glass of wine every other night, I’d be skinny. But honestly, those are liquid calories I am SO not ready to relinquish. Nope. No way. No how.

@Claudia, You are doing great! Thanks for sharing! π

The recipes I will have to try. They look very enticing.
@Dr. Hubbard, Thanks for your comments!

Thankfully, a nice cold glass of water has always been my favorite drink. The pop thing is rare for me, though a few beers on my free day are always very welcome!
@Maggie’s Mind, You are on your way! Good for you! π

Great Post, Mark! This reminds me that I once gain 10lbs in a month. How was this possible??? Well, that because I was drinking 2 venti pumpkin spice lattes a day. I actually believed that by drinking them with nonfat milk, I was doing ok. But, I was in serious denial!I stopped drinking the lattes and guess what, the 10lbs came right off. Ever since that experience, I always check the calories on drinks.

@Rosy, Great job with your accomplishments…thanks for sharing! π

If I can’t eat it, I don’t want the calories! Selfish me π But it actually helps in the long run!
————————
@Tiffany, Good call!
-Mark
I would much rather eat calories then drink them. So, all I really drink is water. If I do drink anything else it is a small glass and that is it.
———————–
@Rachel D, I definitely have a better grasp of my caloric intake when I eat. Thanks!

I hadn’t visited this blog (my blog!) in ages and was taken aback to see a comment π Thanks!
I was just thinking tonight that I’d like to start writing more for that blog (as opposed to my HYC blog).
My first time here and I must say that I’m very impressed by your blog and will be back. What a lot of great information!
Thank you again.

@Manuela, I enjoy your writing…keep it going! π

I SOOOOOOO NEED TO WATCH HFC more.

@MizFit, We all do definitely! The High Fructose Corn Syrup is in so many foods….it can be a challenge!
Thanks!

I only drink diet soda, but I know if I could quit, it would help me lose a few pounds. The only problem? I need the caffeine! (and I don’t drink coffee)
other than that, I’m water all the way. love it! Even got my kids hooked, no juice for them! π
@workout mommy, As you know moderation is the key…thanks for sharing! π
-Mark
I’m fortunate because all I really like to drink is water. To mix things up, sometimes I drink sparkling water. π

@FatFighter, Water..yes!
-Mark
Oooh, that Lemon Ginger Ice Tea sounds delicious. I love Starbucks fresh brewed Iced Green Tea. Oh, so good.
I try to stick to water as much as possible. Once in awhile, though, I will have a Coke Zero.

@Losing Irene, You are doing great!

GREAT post!!! I have always tried to avoid liquid calories as much as possible……although, I do occasionally succumb to a yoo hoo lite!!!

@KFJ, Thanks for your feedback! π

That fizzy water sounds great! I’ll have to stop at the store on the way home.

@Gena, Thanks for your comments!

Took me a while to wean off Pepsi to diet Pepsi. Now I get the water in but sometimes miss the fizz! Thanks for the recipes!
—————————-
@DaDivaStreet, Something about the fizz! Thanks for your feedback!
-Mark
I like the looks of that fizzy water! But I don’t like using artificial sweeteners and I love tea but most iced teas seem to ask for large quantities of sugar. I wonder if theres an iced tea that DOESN’T contain lots of sugar?
I like chewing on my calories. Liquid calories just don’t do it for me! The only liquid calories I really drink are milk and the occasional glass of wine. I kind of feel cheated if I’m consuming large amounts of calories via liquid when it doesn’t fill me up!
———————————————-
@Sagan, Very good input! Thank you!

Interesting post. I think for many folks-drinking to many calories has become a habit. Just always going around with a softdink in hand.
———————————-
@Tipper, It does seem to be a habit for many!

I am a water girl these days. Occasionally I have some wine but mostly it’s just water for me.
Great post, great site, and thanks for the love on my page.

@Jenn, Yay Water! π

I’ve told many people that “I prefer to eat my calories rather than drink them.” Unless it’s a protein shake or soy milk on my cereal, my drink of choice is usually water! π

@Zandria, Good call….thanks for sharing!

Great points of interest.
And then there’s the soda most of us drink… whew.
———————————-
@Strong One, Yup…soda! :/
-Mark
The first recipe I already do but with 70% fizzy water and 30% og. The second recipe looks very interesting and I will try to do.
It’s always good to have new options.

@Alex, Thanks for your comments!

I just went back to read your “My Fitness Journey” post. I just looked into signing up for Lifetime Fitness’s boot camp starting in October. You’ve convinced me. Much more economical than a personal trainer. I’m training for a marathon and just can’t seem to lose a pound.
—————————
@Tammy, Trying to change it up a bit! Great!
-Mark
I tried your 50/50 fizzy water-that was great! And my little boy likes it too! Thanks for all the motivation to get healthy!
——————-
@Miche, Glad you like it!
-Mark
This is but one of the many many reasons I do not drink soda – why “waste” that many calories on a beverage that I don’t even like very much….
Wine, on the other hand,….
————————————
@Missicat, Good point!
-Mark
Unfortunately I love liquid calories: Starbucks, juice, beer, even milkshakes sometimes for lunch! I know they all add up. I did manage to switch to diet soda, but my points journal still shows I take in a lot of my calories thru the liquids…. Will try out your recipes soon, they look good!

@Juicebox.mom, Thanks for sharing!

I was lucky enough to grow up with a mom who discouraged me from consuming liquid calories, so it’s never been much of a problem for me. However, when I was a teen, I did have a large Frappucino problem. It was very sad, but I got over it. π
———————————
@The Baroness, Those Fraps can be brutal! π
-Mark
This was a big one when I began my weight loss journey about four years ago. I was drinking one to two sodas a day. Now I have the equivalent of maybe one to two sodas a month. Just this one thing – cutting way back on soda – was one of the biggest and best changes I made in my life. And you know what, I don’t even miss it at all now.
Beer…that’s another story. In fact I’m doing a 5K run tomorrow, and it’s my favorite – in part (no completely) because they have free beer afterward. At 9 AM in the morning. Seemed weird the first year. Not anymore…

@Lance, Great job!

I just started drinking tea this past 6 months, better late than never, right? Your recipe looks great. I really enjoy your blog and wanted to let you know that you just went live on my blogroll. I’d love it if you would add me to yours! http://www.audrakrell.com

@Mama Zen, Thanks!

I avoid those soft drink. Still prefer fruit juice, the nature type. Nice post!
——————————–
@Fruity, Good preference!
-Mark
Ahh, those sneaky liquid calories. I learned a long time ago that they contributed many, many pounds during my weight gain and have since avoided them like the plague. I drink only water unless nothing else is available or someone made sweet tea for the occasion (I do live in the South!). But generally its only water for me – the sodas I used to drink multiples of daily now hurt when I try them!
———————————————
@Mary, Water is a great choice!
-Mark
I usually don’t drink much soda or juice but I never thought to look for the high fructose corn syrup on diet sodas. I’m going to check my fridge right now! Thanks!
@Kathryn, Thanks for sharing!
-Mark
Good things to think about; I don’t drink anything but water and the occasional diet soda. I have found Splenda gives me a headache and/or tummy ache.

@blogversary, Water is the way to go!
