Do you have 20-30 minutes 4-5 times a week available? Sure you do….you can do these exercises while watching your favorite television show.
An abdominal work out that I swear by:
1) Do 1 set of an abdominal crunch, 75-100 reps.
2) Do at least two sets each side of standard, oblique crunches, 15 to 20 reps.
3) Planks 4 sets, 1 minute each, 30 seconds breaks.
4) Do 10 repetitions of side bends. Stand up straight with a dumbbell in your right hand and your left hand placed on your hip. Bend to your right slowly, lowering the dumbbell until you feel the muscle in your side (oblique) contracting. Pause, then slowly rise to your starting position. Switch the dumbbell to the otherhand and repeat 3 times.
Important!
Incorporate cardiovascular exercise into your program. Exercise for 20 to 30 minutes at a moderate pace, four days a week. A moderate pace is 55 to 75 percent of your maximum effort. You should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising. Track your heart rate by wearing an arm or wrist heart rate monitor while you work out.
These are exercises that take up so little time and fabulous abs are the results!

IzzyBeth- Fantastic….let us know how it goes!:)
I think ab exercises are really important to increase core strength, but I always find people who spend 20-30 minutes on their abs in the gym funny. I know we don’t want to believe that to get ab definition our body fat has to be pretty low, but hey, its true.
I like your approach, do it while watching TV! Is your Planks 4 sets of 3, so 12 planks total? That seems like a lot… Have you ever tried plank dips? Those are killer!
Mallory- I agree….too much time spent in the gym already. 4 total planks at a 1 minute hold each. Yes, I have tried the plank dips..I love them! You are correct it is so important to increase the core strength. Thanks for your comments!
It’s taken me some practice, but the old ‘abdominal’ reference is mostly incorrrect by current standards.
The ‘Core’ is probably the most used, but the least exercised portion of the human body!
A good beginners guide of exercises for the core!
The great thing about the core, the list of exercises are endless!!
Strong One- Yes! Tons and tons of core exercise options. Thank you!
I love the plank, especially during tv commercials. I forgot about the side bends, I will add them in next time. Thanks! ๐
Workout Mommy- I love em too!
aw your little graphics are so cute. i want to put that little guy in my pocket.
its so true though. My clients are always asking what the best ab exercises (well, actually they ask how to spot reducde which i have to remind them is impossible) are, and its very anticlimactic when i say crunches.
Mark,
I appreciate your simple approach to this stuff. For a busy working mom, simple is good! Gotta go work on the abs now…
Every Gym’s Nightmare-Thanks for your feedback! ๐
bridgetztalk-Simple is good..I agree!
and for me? 90% of the abs?
made by my fridge and cupboards contents.
MizFit- All healthy I am sure! ๐
Great blog! Adding you to my favs!
Great advice. I often see patients who are muscular but having back problems. They usually have not been too interested in core strengthening.
But for those just starting out, do you have any experience with one of the gadgets marketed to help people that can barely do one crunch? I don’t.

James-I have tried out many various sit up or core strengthening gadgets if you will. From my personal experience they are no more effective than a crunch or plank. If an individual finds a crunch challenging a physio ball or bosu ball is great for support of the lower back. I have a physio ball at home that works well for me during the aching moments. Of course as I always, these exercises work for me and people should seek out medical advice from the experts if they have any concerns. Great questions!
I agree that is seems like when you just go back to the basics you get the best results. I have never found anything better then your standard crunches.
@Rachel, I appreciate your feedback as always! ๐
