In an earlier post Fitness At All Ages we had Dara Torres featured, and on the brink of becoming the oldest individual in the history of the Olympics to compete for the US in the 50-meter freestyle and the 100-meter freestyle.

Dara Torres continued her stunning quest at the trials Saturday night –she earned a spot in the 100 freestyle Friday night. 41-year-old Dara Torres also set a US record in the 50-meter freestyle (24.25 seconds).

Torres, who last held the American record in the 100-meter freestyle 20 years ago, defeated Natalie Coughlin — the current holder of the national standard — in Friday’s championship heat to become the oldest American swimmer to qualify to compete in the Olympics. The honor isn’t anything new to Torres, who held the previous distinction at age 33, when she captured four of her nine career Olympic medals at the 2000 Sydney Games.

“To do what she’s doing now is amazing. I can guarantee you won’t see me swimming when I’m 40,” said Phelps, who was a teammate of Torres’ at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. “I’ve been calling her my `mom.’ At 41, with a kid, it’s extremely impressive to have her come out here and win the 100 free.”

Time and time again we are provided examples of what the mind, human spirit and commitment can do for us. A fantastic job by Dara Torres and an inspiration. Good luck in the Olympics!
